the value of art

There has been much talk about the value of art classes and activities for children. There have been studies that it makes them better learners plus there is the social value that it builds self esteem. Here in New York (the inner) City, arts are taught in public housing community centers to kids and teens as a way to steer them away from drugs and other illegal activities by keeping them busy and again building self -esteem and helping them develop good hobbies.
In this post I would like to discuss the value of art for seniors.
My Mom started taking art classes at her local senior center about 4 years ago. It has done wonders for her self-esteem and keeps her busier preventing her from calling me more than once a day. She has won prizes in the art show her center participates in and now she take her art very seriously. Today she was working on her "homework" that the art teacher assigned. They are learning how to draw figures in profile. She was pretty proud of her drawing but thinks she needs to practice more.

Here she is lat work

That's awesome. It's so easy to get jaded about the value of art, especially in NY...thanks for writing about this! --TK
